A Mountain Escape: Visiting Sevegre from Pura Vida World
By Lance Rankin
One of the greatest privileges of staying at the Pura Vida World vacation home is how perfectly positioned it is to explore the incredible wonders of Costa Rica — including some truly off-the-beaten-path adventures that most travelers never discover. One of my absolute favorite excursions is the mountain journey up to Sevegre Hotel, nestled in the breathtaking highland valley of San Gerardo De Dota. If you're looking for an unforgettable night or two away from the ordinary, this is the trip for you.
🚗 The Journey Into the Clouds
Leaving from Pura Vida World, you'll wind your way up into the Talamanca Mountains along the Pan-American Highway. As the elevation climbs, the air begins to cool and the scenery shifts dramatically — dense cloud forests close in around you, and misty valleys drop away below the roadside. The drive itself is an experience, filled with stunning vistas around every bend. When you turn off the main highway and descend the narrow, winding road into San Gerardo De Dota, you'll feel like you've entered another world entirely.
🏡 Arriving at Sevegre
Tucked into a lush mountain valley surrounded by towering cloud forest peaks, Sevegre Hotel is one of Costa Rica's true hidden gems. The moment you arrive, the cool, crisp mountain air wraps around you — a refreshing contrast to the warmer lowland temperatures. The property is beautifully maintained, with cozy cabins and lodge-style accommodations that feel warm and inviting as the mountain evenings turn cold.
And yes — it does get cold up here at night. Pack a jacket, a sweater, and maybe a second one. Curling up under blankets in the mountain chill after a full day of adventure is one of life's simple pleasures.
🎣 Trout Fishing in the Mountain Streams
One of the most unique and memorable experiences at Sevegre is trout fishing in the pristine mountain streams that flow right through the property. These cold, crystal-clear waters tumbling down from the peaks above are home to beautiful rainbow trout, and you don't need to be an expert to enjoy the experience. Whether you're an avid angler or a first-timer, there's something deeply peaceful and satisfying about casting a line in the shadow of cloud-capped mountains.
And here's the best part — the trout you catch can be prepared fresh at the on-site restaurant, cooked to perfection and served as a truly farm-to-table (or rather, stream-to-table) meal. There is simply nothing better than sitting down to a plate of fresh-caught mountain trout after a morning spent beside the stream.
🐴 Horseback Riding Through the Mountains
For those who want to explore the surrounding landscape in style, horseback riding at Sevegre is an experience not to be missed. Riding through the mountain trails on horseback, with the cloud forest stretching out in every direction and the valley far below, is the kind of experience that stays with you long after you've returned home. It's adventure, beauty, and serenity all rolled into one.
💧 Waterfall Trails & Hidden Wonders
Lace up your hiking boots, because the waterfall trails at Sevegre are absolutely spectacular. The property features walking trails that wind through lush forest and alongside rushing streams, leading to stunning waterfalls tucked away in the mountain landscape. The sound of rushing water, the smell of the forest, the cool mountain air — every step on these trails feels like a gift.
🏔️ Some of the Most Beautiful Views in All of Costa Rica
I've traveled extensively throughout Costa Rica, and I can say without hesitation that San Gerardo De Dota and the area around Sevegre offers some of the most breathtaking views in the entire country. The cloud forest, the dramatic mountain ridgelines, the valleys draped in mist — it's the kind of scenery that makes you stop in your tracks and just breathe it all in. Every corner you turn reveals something magnificent.
🌙 Stay a Night or Two — You Won't Regret It
This is not a place to rush through. I strongly encourage you to plan for at least one or two nights at Sevegre. Let yourself settle in. Fish in the morning, ride horses in the afternoon, walk to a waterfall, and end the evening with a glass of wine beside a warm fire as the mountain night air rolls in. Have the fresh trout for dinner. Sleep under thick blankets and wake up to misty mountain mornings.
Starting from the Pura Vida World vacation home, Sevegre is a completely accessible and completely unforgettable adventure — the kind of trip that reminds you why you came to Costa Rica in the first place.
Pura Vida!
